Throne Room & Ballroom 7rOap85

The throne room to the castle lies beyond a plain, hand-carved antechamber in the trunk of the tree. Much like the rest of the castle, a great deal of the structure of the room is made from the tree itself. What appear to be marble columns are, indeed, the petrified trunks of ash trees that reach high into the sky. Their branches form a vaulted ceiling, gaps between them filled in with colored resin to create a natural stain glass pattern. At the head of the room, nestled into an amber-backed alcove, sits the queen’s throne: a resplendent piece of gold filigree, precious stones, and the branches and flowers of many of the forest’s plants.

In preparation for the queen’s first annual winter ball, the faerie lights that often light the room with their softly colored hues have been doubled and changed to various shades of blue and silver. Faintly luminescent icicles catch and reflect their glows. Thick and intricate patterns of frost coat the windows, and fanciful ice sculptures line the tables of refreshments set out along the walls. Specially crafted by the elves and fae, the food provided is said to be irresistible and almost addicting—a word of caution, if you please. The tables and many other accoutrements of the palace have, for the time, been set as far aside as possible to make room on the polished floor for dancing. Music thrums in the air from an unseen source, haunting and lovely, and as the light of the moon falls dappled to the floor, a soft snow begins to fall…

They made quite a stir when they entered the ballroom, the queen and her consort. Of course, they always did. Chimitsu never missed the disapproving stares, the patronizing looks of disgust, or the whispers that cut the distance like knives. For a queen to have a lover was one thing; that she have relations with such a man who was also her Captain of the Guard and second in command in her Guild…Well. That was entirely another thing. A scandal, really, but she’d never been one for gossip.

Her fingers curled the slightest bit over Achilles’ arm as they stepped in from the side entrance. The Elven ton would not lack for gossip fodder this time around; her dress and feet and shoes were damp, sporting wet blades of grass she had not yet bothered to clean, and after an hours’ absence, she had returned to the party with none other than her most favorite arm candy. Casting a glance at him from under the few loosened tendrils of her hair, though, Chimitsu could not say she regretted her choice. There was far more to Achilles than dalliances in the dark and a striking physique. He challenged her and made her feel safe, comforted, treasured…ah, he made her feel! That was at the root of it, wasn’t it?

Damn the indecency; they’ve seen nothing worse than the day Mael gave his reign to me, she thought with a vague smile.

Chimitsu leaned up on her toes and kissed the corner of Achilles’ mouth. Then, lifting her chin, walked through the parting sea of bodies to the ballroom’s center floor. Snow crystals alighted in her hair as she stood beneath the skylight. It acted as a natural spotlight, and she welcomed the pool of light for the berth the party guests made. Her attention, however, was not for them anymore; it was, heart, mind, and, truly, all of her, for the man in front of her. As an accompaniment of pianos struck up the evening’s last song, she shut her eyes and let out a breath. This felt like where she was supposed to be.
