Castle Spire

At the furthest reach of the castle, the pinnacle spire pointing to the center of the swirling clouds, is an observation deck of gold and ivory. While these staggering heights might paralyze those of weak constitution, the crisp air is refreshing, and the atmosphere at night is truly a sight to behold. Be careful not to fall; there are no safety nets!

Mael slowly made his way up the stairs, carrying Amber in his arms and chuckling. His white tuxedo gathered the glitter from her dress and his hair meshed with hers. Kissing her lightly, he nodded in agreement to her statement.

"The air does make me feel much better. I feel like I'm complete now. I know that we've made the world as perfect as we could, and I've trained and prepared many for any events to come. My only wish now is to spend the rest of forever with you..." he finished softly, setting her down as they came to the top of the spire.

His golden eyes looked down into the honey gaze that he had fallen in love with so many years ago. His hands held hers, the soft touch being all that he ever wanted to be embraced by for as long as he possibly could. Leaning down to kiss her, he placed a slow, loving kiss on her soft lips, drawing back to look down into her eyes with that adventurous gleam once more.

"Come with me." he said.

"You've the ability to give up humanity and come back, right? Come with me, and spend the rest of eternity with me in peace." he offered, smiling and hoping her response would come as easily as her choice to let him live the night prior.

Safe and secure in Mael’s arms at last, when he set her down Amber was reluctant to let him go. Her hand still entwined in his, she savored the taste of his lips as long as she could, knowing full well that it would disappear more quickly than she would like. Stepping into him, she sheltered herself against his chest, turning her head to look out over the planet her man had strived so hard to care for. Everything here had all but torn him to pieces, but still he remained. It was due time he was given rest.

“We’d be leaving him all on his own,” she worried softly, “but…but he should be okay, yes…? I know it’s selfish, but by all rights, neither of us should have been here in the first place…We’re both long past our due.”

With one step away, she marked her pace out in measured steps, taking him with her to the balcony. Night sky overhead and morning long away, she brought Mael’s hand up to her heart and turned to face him. Standing on her tiptoes, she kissed him lovingly and held him as long as she could, already able to feel his strength ebbing.

”I don’t think I could bear to stay away from you anymore, Mael. It’s a pretty night to go, I think. Don’t you…?”

Mael stepped with her to the balcony, letting the gentle angel lead him. His golden eyes watched her as she walked. He followed her all too willingly and kissed her once more as she worried about him.

"Our best kept secret?" he asked with a smile. "He'll be alright. And heaven knows he's his father's son. He'll survive through the most tribulant of times." Mael continued as he felt his hand pressed to her heart.

His strength began fading all at once suddenly, and he held her against him as tight as he could, kissing her back slowly and lovingly, pouring all of the strength and care that he had left into it. The white tuxedo suddenly matched his skin tone, and he faded all at once, falling against her gently. His energy flowed out freely, and it caused a fireworks display of sorts to light off about the castle. The display very much brightened the spirits of the sad occurrence, and Mael's body, instead of becoming heavy, became very much weightless in the arms of his beloved, carried by the energy that had just escaped him, his golden eyes shutting for the very last time on this plane as he murmured.

"A beautiful night...with my beautiful angel...I love you Amber.." his last words said as he finally faltered.

Feeling Mael die in her arms, Amber trembled quietly, shutting her eyes as tears poured down her cheeks. Hiccupping quietly, she lifted her gaze to the starry sky above and offered a heartrending prayer, words for she, Mael, and all else they cared about. A holy light enveloped her shortly after as she knelt cradling Mael’s body to her chest. Soft, feathery white wings curled around her body and his, embracing the lovers for one last time. In a flurry of feathers and gentle light, they disappeared for the last time, a last, lovelorn echo of “I love you” fluttering to the ground with the remnants of their passage.
