Library of the Ancients BtNQO

Tucked in the far corner of the castle, far from the entrance is a secret library. Many of the books here cannot be found anywhere else, for they are hundreds—maybe thousands—of years old. Like many rooms in the castle, this room has green foliage growing in it all year round. There are bookshelves standing at about eight or nine feet in the air, neatly lined with books bound in leather. There is a small table and a chair or two that faces the beautiful but large windows at the back of the library. Very few people know of this beautiful place, for no one is permitted here because it is almost sacred ground to many of the people who live on this planet.

There had been a large, abrupt absence in the presence of beings within the towns and cities of Nier as of late. It seemed as though each day, the population was either rapidly decreasing or migrating to another location. During one of Velka's missions, she managed to interrogate a common Sinner and discovered exactly what was causing the shift. Monarch's Castle, hm? She hadn't heard of it before despite having entered the Nature's Claim a few times in the past.
Curiosity got the better of her eventually. Before she could properly think of a legitimate reason why so many would want to come out and see this castle, she had already seen it, answering the question herself the minute her eyes lay on it. For the first time since she came to this planet, which was the equivalent to her coming into existence, Velka found herself an interest other than the mission she lived for. Desiring to explore this colossal labyrinth of mystery before her, she entered the front door just as everyone else did. Her nose began detecting an enormous amount of Sinners, attempting to ignore it. There was nothing she could do with their numbers so large. The scent, however, was extremely irritating, effecting her enough to nudge her exploration to the far corners of the castle. Doing so pushed her far from the gargantuan crowds pouring into the main entrance and all other major attraction.
Midway through her expedition, she happened to find an entrance that almost seemed hidden. Standing just outside of the room, a unique, overwhelming scent of age hit Velka. It didn't carry a displeasing aroma, but more so a fragrance of old leather and parchment. This mixture confirmed her assumption that what she had stumbled upon was indeed an ancient library. Having been stationary at the entrance, she made a few steps to officially enter, her hands being careful to stay to herself. Keen yellow eyes scanned the room in search of where to start the new investigation while a breeze blew through the large open windows, carrying Velka's short black kimono with it as it passed between the many bookshelves.
"What an interesting find" she whispered.

Achilles sat in one of the large, open windows to the library, leaning against the windowframe with his feet perched on the windowsill. Freshly changed for his duties from the hunt earlier, he now wore mint green undergarments consisting of a collared shirt with white cuff links and pants of a light, yet tough material that fit his legs well. Fastening his shirt to his chest was a vest of white with mint green accents that looked to be adorned with a type of mithril chainmail interwoven into the material. Bracers of the same were fastened over his forearms and shins, though the black leather boots that he wore seemed the most plain. They looked worn, as if they had been used for decades. His white cloak hung from his shoulders, attached to his vest, giving him the look of his station.

Achilles cared little for all of the uniform requirements. He was good enough to keep out of harm's way without needing armor designed to allow for taking hits. His personal goal was to avoid as many of the opponent's blows as possible, so the concept of all of this "necessary garb" was rather trivial to him. Nonetheless, he wore what he must to keep this castle and his queen as safe as possible.

The sandy-haired captain had left his hair loosely tied back and falling about his face, which left his golden piercing gaze slightly less direct, which was what he turned on the guest whose arrival had been easily predicted. This was no restricted area, but still, a solitary guest wandering so far from the area of the festivities was suspect enough to take a walk, as little as he liked this particular room. He loved libraries, just not this one. This one held a migraine waiting to happen in the form of another soul's memories.

Hopping down from the window, Achilles approached the guest, keeping his distance to give her personal space. "You're awfully far from the festivities, aren't you?" he asked, masking any suspicion in his tone with pure curiosity. "Though you're right. This room is quite the find." he said with a ghost of a smile.

Libraries were quite known to be silent, and for good reason. The sudden breaking of solitude, just when Velka thought to have escaped the very individuals she was attempting to avoid, startled her for an instant, jolting her senses back to the way they were meant to be: Alert. Her shifty vision found the origin of the voice and settled upon him, the natural glare, and hint of vexation, forwarded directly into his eyes. "Not far enough, actually," said Velka displeasingly, stepping perpendicular to him, heading in the direction of a nearby table. Her fingers laid gently onto it with a slight patter, the rapier known as Xifos shifting on her right side just a tad.
A tinge of irritation began to burn on the back of her right hand, just over the crescent moon scar. The one upon her left hand, and identical birth mark on her chest, remained calm however. Taking the time to look over the man's figure, she secured his physical identity into her mind for future reference, should it be needed. In her investigation, she found his attire to suit the reaction her body had towards him: A possible warrior, perhaps a Sinner. But Velka was reluctant to make any assumptions yet. There were far too many beings within the vicinity to get an accurate reading from a single target using her instincts alone.
Velka nodded dully, keeping eye contact throughout. "It has lost its secrecy vibe now that i have discovered another here, however." Her head tilted towards the table with faint disappointment, waiting for him make his next action.

Her displeasure was dripping from her tone, and it unfortunately was cute enough to make him chuckle a little. Noting her transition in forward motion, Achilles kept his distance, shifting his own path to parallel hers and remain out of range of the length of her weapon and her arm combined. The instincts he had were quite useful in situations like this, and he had to rely on them a small amount to find her here.

The captain found a bookcase in his path with the appropriate distance and leaned against it lightly, his own weapon plainly visible now. The curved bladerang hung at the back of his right hip and was previously not visible due to the angle at which he sat on the window. Previously, however, she was an escapee from the festivities. Now, it seemed she was more like himself and the queen. Either she was overloading her sensory abilities with so many people that it was a little painful to be around, or she hated large crowds. Either would be a trait she shared with both of them.

Crossing his arms, he felt a response weighing on him. "There is very little that is secret to me in the castle, or indeed, this forest. I doubt many others would be able to find this place, so you needn't worry." he said in an attempt to assuage her worry about the secrecy.

"You won't be shaking me very easily if you plan on wandering around though. It's my job to keep this place safe, and it wouldn't do to have someone running around in our Library of the Ancients unchecked, hmm?" he half-asked.

In an effort to avoid arrogance, he looked her over once more before posing his question. "You look to be running from the crowd. Overloading your sensory ability? Perhaps too many people make it difficult to focus." he mused, pretending to mull it over. "You and I share that, if that's the case." Achilles offered as recompense for following her out.

"How rude of me." he thought aloud, pushing off of the bookshelf and taking two steps forward to extend his hand. "I am Achilles, the captain of the guard here. And yourself?" he asked politely.

Every inch the man took was taken into account, from the way he carried himself, to the manner in which the wind and atmosphere treated his clothing and hair. By being so precise with her judgments, she could take an educated guess as to how he would fair in an engage should she take him on here and now. The thought never left Velka's mind, that is until she noticed the weapon he adorned. It was odd looking to her, for she hadn't seen something quite like it in her four years of coming into existence. Even with her abrasive nature, she knew to not aggro something whose abilities were unknown to her.
Velka's previously dull eyes opened a smidgen wider, taking in more of the surrounding area into view than before. This gave her the look of false intrigue. "I suppose that makes me unusually perceptive," she said in a sarcastic manner. So it is indeed 'ancient'... she thought for a moment, the assumption she made when entering the room proving to be correct. "There are thousands of other individuals you could be pestering. I won't accept that excuse..."
She paused seemingly mid sentence, sliding her fingers across the table until they lost contact against its edge. A thought occurred to her at that moment, but with Achilles having closed the gap to extend his hand to her, it had wait. "You assume much from rather vague facts 'Achilles'," said Velka, lowering her gaze to the hand in front of her. "I rather loathe touching," she said, taking a gentle step back. "Nevertheless, I am referred to as Velka. No title."
Her voice carried no traceable signs of aggravation as her eyes clearly displayed, which had left the hand now to meet the similarly hued eyes of Achilles.

Standoffish was an understatement with this child, it seemed. Achilles wasn't taken aback by it, but it did provide another mental note for him as he dropped his hand, stepping back to the bookcase he had grown fond of. The extension of a handshake was as much a test as it was a courtesy to the now elder huntsman. Much could be gauged by its acceptance, or lack thereof. Analysis of this one was easy, he thought to himself. She's bothered, confidence edging on arrogance, and simply not sociable. Fun. he thought further, his ghostly half smile making a reappearance.

"I assume little and assess much from simple things. Comes with the line of work." he retorted instantly, almost coolly. "As for the thousands of other people being here, you'd do well to notice that not a single other soul has wandered this far. You have, and we are shy no amount of guards to track down people that haven't gone elsewhere." came his even more icy response.

"That said, it's a pleasure to meet you, Velka." the captain said as cordially as he could given the circumstance. "I, too loathe touching others when they're following me. Though I can't say I often allow myself to be caught." he said in a very pointed manner, pushing off of the bookcase once more to walk in a carefully decided perimeter, keeping his distance precisely. The man walked confidently, as if each step was planned, yet careless as to whether it would cause him harm or not. If she were a threat to me, she'd easily....be a different shade, he thought privately, his eyes glazing for only a moment to ensure he was correct.

"Since you haven't answered much, may I ask what drew you here? Curiosity is fine, as it's not off-limits, but if you've come with a mind to ransack either the knowledge or property here, then you'd best be off before someone a little less understanding than myself makes an appearance." he informed her, the underlying warning made clearly evident.

It seemed as though Velka had struck a nerve in her unintentional poking of the guard's methods. The situation nearly made a smirk appear on her face, but she withheld it. He didn't look to be one who would enjoy being made fun of. This was his territory after all, and she was smart enough to know where her boundaries lie.
To his first two statements defending his ways, she shrugged, moving her head so it sat straight on her shoulders, rather than tilted as it was before. "Well, i would have to be sneaking to be caught. I simply wandered here, you see?" The question was rhetorical, and so she continued on before being given the chance to follow up with an answer. Nervous wouldn't be the word to describe what she felt as he began to circle her. Agitated better suited it, and so, Velka took a few steps to exit the perimeter he began to create to step into the aisle just next to where he once leaned. She didn't dwell too far into it though, staying just outside of Achilles' view so he'd have to make a physical effort to see her around the corner.
"Ransacking, no. I hadn't a clue what i would find here, but upon my discovery of a library..." She paused, taking her stare from the spines of the books before her and directing it out towards where he strode. "...an ancient library, at that, i have come to wonder if it would contain the myths and legends of my mother," said Velka, placing a single finger upon a random book, sliding it down the spine delicately. "It would be rather intriguing to see how accurately these portray her."
Velka was not one to often speak of herself, but but the feeling was beginning to form that this guard would escort her from the premises if she continued to be secretive in her intentions. Her current 'mission' contained nothing for her to hide, and so she would most likely let him into her head for the time being.

Smirking, he shook his head lightly. This one was intelligent; he'd have to give her that. "I suppose that depends on what you'd mean by caught. If your intentions were indeed to ransack this place, then regardless of whether you came here by design or accident would mean little." he replied logically, halting his perimeter pace and spinning on his heels towards her before halting instantly.

"It's good that you're being honest. If you were telling it falsely, I may have caught onto that, and I hope you're the type of person that would tell me something regardless of whether I'd like it or not. That's nice to have." he let on, letting his fingers trail to his unique weaponry and playing with a small strap of leather hanging from the blade's hilt that had fallen off from years of use.

Utilizing his hand to brush his hair from his face to watch her more carefully, he glanced at her finger sliding down the spine of the book. "Little knowledge of parents typically give me pause for sympathy.I haven't decided whether this time will be typical or not, however. Do you have any idea what section you should be looking in? I may be able to assist you instead of cause you any more verbal offense." he explained, letting his hand off of his blade and taking her previous position, awaiting her response.

The facial expression materializing upon Achilles' face ensured Velka that she had said the proper wording in the proper manner to ensure her stay here. Long enough for her to search the proper books to obtain the knowledge she sought, anyway. With her gaze placed on him as he spoke, more specifically his lips, she quietly listened to what he had to say before speaking out herself. "It is a rare occasion that i take another's sentiments into consideration when speaking," said Velka, no longer feeling it necessary to keep him within full view at all times. She shifted the majority of her attention back to the volumes of books in front of her, taking her time to read them.
As Achilles spoke in reference to the relationship between herself and her mother, a faint smirk showed itself in the far corner of her lips. Conveniently, it was on the side where he resided, to the left. As he continued on to offer his assistance, Velka found the portion referring to his 'verbal offence' quite amusing. Amusing to the point of making her laugh in one short burst. "Naturally, i'd assume my situation is not typical, as you will likely figure out soon enough. Furthermore, your sympathy is neither wanted nor needed with me," she said, licking her chapped lips briefly. Velka pulled one of the books out in front of her to peer at the front, swiftly putting it back after realizing it was not what she had hoped. "Presuming we are allies, at least until this is search is over, we would be looking for information on Goddesses."
With one hand still scanning the engravings on the spines of books, and the other hanging uselessly at her side near Xifos, she awaited his response to her own words, peering in his general direction through the thick bangs of her hair.

A chuckle was brought to the captain's lips along witha twinkle of his eyes that adorned his next response. "As far as your assumption goes, I suppose it's something like that." he answered quizzically. Pushing forward to regain his feet, Achilles walked slowly down one shelf as if he were looking one by one. In allowing his eyes to glaze over for a moment, he'd found what she was looking for already, and it would be even easier to simply search The Catalog. He'd come to discover that the castle's previous ruler was not disorganized. As a matter of fact, they'd perhaps been the most disgustingly organized person he could think of.

Allowing a shrug as his thoughts wandered off, he figured it was probably much easier to have that level of control over one's organization when things could be moved by a thought. Such is life.. he thought to himself with a sigh as he turned a corner back towards his surprise occupant.

"Are you looking for anything in particular? Or shall I come up with a list of things that you should begin reading through just now?" he asked her, almost lazily.

Acceptable for now.
"Fair enough," she replied to Achilles' response. As he pulled himself from view, Velka's gaze kept stationary, staring at the wall behind where the guard once stood until she could no longer feel his immediate presence. When that opportunity presented itself, she faced the opposite direction, taking two steps forward so she would be within reaching distance of the shelf. There was a particular book she glanced at that stood out from the rest, having been static for so long that vines had begun to intertwine between the pages, its face having been pierced by some other sorts of growth. The scent rising from it held the aroma of fresh dew, a smell Velka couldn't place at the moment. "Even if this doesn't hold what i'm looking for, there's bound to be something of interest here," she whispered below her breath. Taking a hold onto the book with two hands, for it was massive, Velka gave a powerful pull until the vines surrounding it snapped, the tome falling into her cradled arms.
Just as she got a good feel for the weight of the book within her arms, Achilles rounded the corner to come back into perception. She gave him a glance with her typical empty-eyed look before walking over to the table where she once stood, looking to relieve herself of the extra weight. "I'd like to go through this first, but the mythology of a Goddess who shares my name would be acceptable searching criteria."
Dropping the tremendous single volume book onto the table caused a loud thud that echoed through the library. It was enough to trigger a cringe in Velka, her eyes narrowing down to it now. She was hesitant to open the book, but simultaneously eager. "This seems as old as the library itself," she said aloud, running her dull nails gently across its front. It was made of black dragon's hide, the pages not created from parchment but something more durable. Even with that, the weight of the book itself didn't seem to match the material it was made out of.
